Gummadikaya Pappu Charu

 This is a delicious South Indian Dal it is also referred to as sambar or Pappu Charu variety made with yellow pumpkin. Sambar can be prepared in a number of ways. Sambar recipe is actually a variation of the dal recipe in which the dal is combined with different varieties of veggies like drumsticks, lady's finger (okra), bottle gourd, carrots, pumpkin, radish, brinjal (eggplant). Also adding onions and tomatoes together with tamarind pulp to offer some tangy taste to the recipe. Sambar goes well with Idly, Dosa, Rice, and Wada as well.

Ingredients

  • Ash Gourd sliced into bigger pieces
  • 1/2 Cup Toor Dal
  • 2 Onions         Cut into Pieces·     
  • 2 Tomatoes                Cut into Pieces·     
  • 1 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Fenugreek Seeds
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 20 Grams Tamarind Pulp
  • Water as required
  • 2 Tablespoons Oil
  • 1 Teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1 1/2 Teaspoon Salt or as needed
  • 1 Teaspoon Jaggery Grated
  • 3 to 4 Green Chilies slit
  • 2 Tablespoons Fresh Coconut Grate
  • Coriander Leaves chopped for garnishing as required
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 2 No's Red Chilies
  • 2 Shoots Curry Leaves
  • 7 to 8 Garlic crushed

Instructions

  1. In a cooker add ½ cup of Toor dal washed twice.

  2. Add 2 Cups of Water to it, along with ½ teaspoon of Cumin Seeds and ¼ Teaspoon of Fenugreek Seeds.

  3. Then add ¼ teaspoon of Turmeric Powder.

  4. Pressure cook it for 3 to whistles, let it release the pressure.

  5. Open the lid and mash the dal thoroughly and keep it aside for a while.

  6. Heat 1 Tablespoon of oil in a pan add 2 chopped Onions, let it fry for a while.

  7. Add Diamond-shaped Ash Gourd Pieces place a lid cook for a moment.

  8. And add 1 Carrot cut into pieces and fry them all.

  9.  Add 2 Tomatoes chopped let them cook soft, then add 1 teaspoon Red Chili Powder.

  10. Add 1 ½ teaspoon of Salt or as needed and add 1 ½ Teaspoon Coriander Powder.

  11. Mix them all and add 1 teaspoon Jaggery Grate or even Sugar can be added.

  12. Add Tamarind Pulp now, made with 20 grams of Tamarind soaked.

  13.  Now add the boiled and mashed dal to this the mixture, let it boil for 10 Minutes.

  14. Add 2 tablespoons of Fresh Coconut grate, which adds a great flavor to the dal.

  15.  Add some chopped Coriander Leaves for garnishing.

  16.  Now will temper it.

  17. Heat 1 Tablespoon of oil in a pan add ½ teaspoon of Cumin Seeds and ¼ teaspoon of Mustard Seeds and let them splutter.

  18. Add 2 chopped Red Chilies to the temper and 2 shoots of Curry Leaves.

  19. Add 7 to 8 garlic cloves let them fry for a while.

  20. Add the temper to the dal.

  21. Yummy tasty and delicious Dal is ready.
